NEW ARTIST SHOWCASE: Robert Francis

30 Nov

With a tender, contrite and honest soul that hearkens back to the heyday of his label Atlantic Records, and the work of those like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Robert Francis is more than a breath of fresh air in popular music. The folk singer’s debut One By One earned him critical acclaim for his worn, emotional and world weary performances with his rapidly becoming a trademark dark baritone voice.

He returns with Before Nightfall, his first release signed to Atlantic, an even deeper and more poignant album than before, as the musical prodigy and wunderkind of just 20 years old gets into tales of heartbreak and loneliness. Songs like “Darkness,” “Nightfall” and “Junebug” detail the passions and emotions of a young man growing into his voice in life, love and song. Francis is one to watch as his awareness and style is a definite throwback to the storytellers and songwriters of the past, a time in music where that art was valued, respected and the norm in the industry. Now, Francis stands as a voice amongst a privileged few, a voice expected to be a giant in the future.

I had the chance to interview the constantly touring Francis for about 15 minutes about his life, creative process and thoughts regarding the future of his career and aspirations.
