GIVING THANKS FOR LOVE SONGS: #27 Mr. Big – "To Be With You"

27 Nov

Wow. Eric Martin’s vocals, Paul Gilbert’s guitar, and hand clap percussion. With the most simplistic hair metal ballad of them all, Mr. Big hit the top 20 in over 20 countries in 1991 with “To Be With You.” At a time that in all reality should have foreshadowed the end of the hair metal era, as face melting licks and scalding drums solos weren’t earning these bands top status, but the sensitive, plaintive ballads were, “To Be With You,” again, through simplicity, is a winner.

This song is beautiful in its lyricism. “Hold on little girl/Show me what he’s done to you/Stand up little girl/A broken heart can’t be that bad/When it’s through, it’s through/Fate will twist the both of you/So come on baby come on over/Let me be the one to show you.” Broken hearts are the worst. Here, Eric Martin writes the perfect doctor’s cure, as prescribed by a young man wanting to get a young woman to give another shot to love, as he knows he can succeed where another man failed. The line “fate will twist the both of you” is absolutely inspired. Clearly, he thinks that fate will twist positively for the woman he’s courting, and negatively for the heartbreaker, and it’s just one of those lines that, if ever in need of a way to convince a woman that you’re the one, you may want to hold in your back pocket or think about and come up with something remotely in that vein. It’s a killer.

The acoustic guitar here is easily the best backdrop possible. Eric Martin’s wailing here is incredibly great, and needs no amplification. He’s being plain, honest and real. He doesn’t even sound like he’s begging, he sounds like he’s winning. He’s a man hellbent, sure and insistent on this relationship. Not arrogant, but confident, and with lines like “Build up your confidence/So you can be on top for once/wake up who cares about/Little boys that talk too much/I’ve seen it all go down/Your game of love was all rained out,” I’d be pretty sure I was going to end up with this woman as well.

“To Be With You” is the song that tells you exactly what it feels like to come back to love’s warm embrace. Sometimes we all have to pull down our guards and learn how to feel again. This one does that better than most.
