THE DROP: Murder Mark and Da Yo Boyz Start Their Assault on Baltimore Club Music

9 Jan

Baltimore’s DJ’s Murder Mark is likely half the age of any of his legendary and iconic Baltimore club music heroes. Producing in a rising in popularity duo with DJ K-Spin known as Da Yo Boyz, he has less than five years of experience, but a refreshing wealth of youthful exuberance and imagination for rediscovering the street and neighborhood roots of Baltimore club music. With a background as a rapper turned producer, he already has a vibrant musicality apparent in his background. It’s not as if he hasn’t been noticed already either. DJ Debonair Samir, creator of one of the most instantaneously recognizable tracks in club music history in “Samir’s Theme”, alongside well respected names like KW Griff (who drops his cuts nearly weekly in his 9-10 PM Friday night mix on Bmore’s 92.3 FM, a required listen for everyone in the vicinity) Mike Mumbles, and yes, the controversial yet talented Aaron Lacrate all cosign the young man’s talents.

But the true reason for discussing him in this space is his track “Cherry Hill and Down Ya Block.” Simply put, the track is massive and goes hard. If there was an underground to the underground sound that is Baltimore Club music, this would have been the anthemic track to that scene of 2009. Club music isn’t something magically created with “Think” and “Sing Sing” breaks for mass public consumption. The music is labeled from its hometown for a reason. Ultimately, there’s something about the energy of the breaks and the vibrancy of the voices on original source club music that makes it such an important and well received style worldwide, but you can’t forget where you’re from to make it where you want to go. “Cherry Hill and Down Ya Block” is all about Southside Baltimore’s Cherry Hill Projects. It carries the feel of literally every child from that area on the record standing up to be recognized.

Murder Mark, and by extension Da Yo Boyz have an entire collection of music called FutaClub Soundz you can download HERE, but let’s keep it real. When kids are popping and locking and crazy legging to your track, you’ve tapped into something massive. Murder Mark has an EP expected he says “will change the club scene as I take a lot of risks,” and Da Yo Boyz are working with Aaron Lacrate’s Mikcrate imprint, and fully expect to have an album dropping in 2010.
