Dido may be famous for the hook from “Thank You” providing the basis for the worldwide success of Eminem’s “Stan.” However, the lilting voiced Briton has had further success. The most telling song of this appeal is from her 2003 release Life for Rent, the beautiful “White Flag.”

“I know you think that I shouldn’t still love you/I’ll tell you that/But if I didn’t say it /Well, I’d still have felt it /Where’s the sense in that?/I promise I’m not trying to make your life harder/Or return to where we were /Well I will go down with this ship /And I won’t put my hands up and surrender /There will be no white flag above my door /I’m in love and always will be.”

The Rick Nowels and Dido collaboration on the songwriting is absolutely stunning. Nowels, who has 60 top 20 singles to his lifetime credit, hits a grand slam here. The metaphor of the “white flag” representing the protagonist’s feelings about her love for this man who has broken her heart is amazing. Sometimes, the hardest part about falling out of love is still knowing that the emotions are still there, still rich and extremely palpable. The feeling of still loving someone even though they’ll never be in your life again in quite the way you want to remember it is tough indeed. Dido’s lovely voice wraps itself firmly around the lyrics, and you feel the slow, deliberate heartbreak of what will be a perpetually unrequited love.

The quixotic nature of the feeling of this song makes it unbelievably satisfying to the emotion. This is a woman who is going to hold VERY fast to her desires, even if they’ll never be satisfied. There’s a faux nobility and grace to this that we all know in love, where you want to walk away with your head held high, but are afraid of the tears that will leak down your cheeks in doing so.

This song encapsulates such a precise emotion so completely well. It is a song of love, but the love that hurts the worst.
