Matthew Hemerlein’s releasing an album tonight at U Street Music Hall. He’s superb. Keep reading…

20 Oct
Matthew Hemerlein is a musical wunderkind. He plays six instruments (violin, cello, seven string guitar, mandolin, upright bass and piano) and is already on the cusp of being the next big rage on the underground, his strings on fellow DC mastermind Nacey’s remix of La Roux’s “Bulletproof” kick off the Major Lazer x La Roux Lazerproof remix project. He’s well known locally as the host of Brightest Young Things’ “Family Hemerlein” variety show event focusing on musicians and comedians on the rise. Furthermore, the album he’s releasing tonight at U Street Music Hall? The product of a Young Performing Artist Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, a great case of government doing something on an artistic level with legitimate benefits. He’s also a music educator, his work in that realm gaining him a feature on BBC’s World News. Again, Matthew Hemerlein is not your typical musician. His sound is borne of soul, jazz and trip hop, a quiet intensity and deep introspection owing as much to Prince as to Radiohead, an auteur’s auteur, and if not already, quick to become your favorite musician’s favorite musician.
Tonight the doors open at 9 PM, tickets are $10, and as a special added benefit, open and closer DJ Chris Nitti (who is a developing selector and producer of note from DC) has teamed with U Hall so as to ensure that proceeds from this event benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a charity close to the heart of the disc jockey.

This will be a magnificent event. If at all possible, do attend.
