THE DROP: Introducing the excellent Israeli pop of Onili, and their call to remixers worldwide!

22 Jul

Irrepressible Israel pop duo Onili represents the boundless passions of a young woman who has decided to find her life’s meaning through transcontinental living and a nonstop melody. However, unlike so many obsessed by the same goal, she has put herself in all the right hands to make her dream a very potent reality.

If I didn’t just tell you that the center of couture driven art pop in the Middle East is in Israel, you probably wouldn’t have believed me, or just nodded in assent while not being extremely familiar with that section of the world. As you are likely already aware, we count the country’s leading electro pop chanteuseses Terry Poison as one of our “STAMPED” artists here at the site, and with good reason. They’re fun, quirky and make great music that reflects this. Following in that same vein are Onili, the Israel by way of Paris, France electro pop duo of the band’s namesake chateuse who handles vocals and a sampler in their live performance, and producer/percussionist Barak Kram who handles the percussion and a sampler as well. The two person pop team has the fire and spunk of Matt & Kim with the DIY style of a group like Baltimore’s AK Slaughter, blending talent and trending it in an awkward but trending toward smooth and likeable direction, simple dance floor melodies buoyed by precision execution that with a visit to SXSW, and stops in Philly and Miami by the group, should be invading American shores in the none too distant future. Plus, given that thir latest “Be Somebunny” EP was produced by Jonathan Levy who has worked with leading Israeli funkateers Izabo, mixed by a man most noted for working with the like of David Bowie in Simon Vinestock, and mastered by Sterling Sound in NYC’s Chris Athens, it’s absolutely clear that they have a direction and know exactly where they’re headed.

The duo has now also put together a remix contest for their biggest collaboration to date as Onili’s artsy power pop mashes with Israeli dub powerhouse Laroz for a perfect tale of summer love, “Why Did You Go?” Hoping to freshen up their Israeli dub ballad with some hotter, more dance floor ready sounds, the acapellas have been made available. The competition has a close for submissions of August 15th, and submissions are to be sent to iwantyou (at) onili.com. What is at stake? Well, the judging/listening session will be live streamed on Justin.Tv and there will also be celebrity judges to be announced. Furthermore, the winner receive a free linktone for the remix, a full PR campaign to Israeli music media and in U.S by The Bloom Effect.  In addition, the winner also receives complimentary registration to attend the CMJ Music Marathon worth $495.00.
