“I’m never gonna dance again/guilty feet have got no rhythm/I’m never gonna dance again/the way I danced with you.”

George Michael in one chorus defines the pain of knowing that you’re doing wrong in a relationship, and that you can’t go home again. “Careless Whisper” is the one of the epic ballads that truly defines the 1980s. Steve Gregory’s saxophone solo is one of the stand alone moments in music. The lyrics, written by George Michael along with Wham co conspirator Andrew Ridgely with the aid and assistance of Jerry Wexler in the same Muscle Shoals, Alabama studio that fostered the careers of Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield, are note perfect, lacking exposition and painfully direct. Even in the realm of the metaphorical, there’s an intentional directness in the poetry that allows the artist to infuse the track with the quiet pain of the song’s meaning.

This song is proudly beautiful. The orchestration is a musical peacock, cooing and strutting about, showing its many colors of incredible sounds. Such pain in the face of such beauty combine to create a love song that’s amazing in that it probably has caused as many couples to make love as break up. The insistence of George Michael’s pain in the face of his error is searing. He wants that moment before his illicit dalliance back. He wants his love to return. It’s almost as if he’d trade all the pain of his future for one second in the past.

Jerry Wexler, who watched Aretha Franklin record “I Never Loved A Man” has his handprints all over this. Prior to this point, Wham! were two young bratty British kids with obsequiously cute pop numbers. After this, Wham! released “Everything She Wants,” one of the greatest mid-tempo soul cuts of the decade. It’s obvious that the legend tapped into the soul of the pop kids and reformed them into soul men. George Michael post Wham has a habit of singing and writing songs that evoke powerful and ingratiating moments of pure, true love. He’s a heart wrencher for sure, and definitely, above all else right now, go back to the moment where this soul wonder discovered his heart, and put it on display for the universe to feel and heal from.
