SHIT I’M DIGGING THIS WEEK

10 May

1. The Electric Zoo festival is coming, and may have topped last year’s epic lineup!

The Chemical Brothers. Armin van Buuren. Paul Van Dyk. Major Lazer. Rusko. A-Trak. Afrojack. Benny Benassi. Wolfgang Gartner. Flying Lotus. Above & Beyond. Boys Noize. Has your head exploded yet? Well, imagine that I haven’t named 30 other scheduled acts, all just as amazing and renowned! Has you face melted from considering this? The vast universe of electronic dance music descends like a gathering of beat hungry tribes upon Randall’s Island in New York City on September 4th and 5th. Last year’s festival was one of the most sonically and visually impressive events of the entire EDM year. Clearly, this year, the organizers at Made Event are attempting to outdo themselves. They will. Visit the Electric Zoo ticket site to get the jump on your two day passes, as the early bird rates end at midnight, May 10th!

2. Badass punk kids become DJs, version 3.0.

Do the names Zombies For Money, Death to the Throne and Murdertronics mean anything to you? No. Well they should. Bored punk kids evolving into dope selectors and producers is a trait as old as time it seems. Punk kids still exist, and their brand of sonic face smashing while using incredibly entertaining and frightening noms de plume is still as cool as ever. The only fear is that these kids will merely stay true to club, dubstep and electro, and not make the moves and take the risks necessary to expand genres. There is something to the concept of dark undertones from the punk and hardcore communities being within electronic dance music that is always a winner. Zombies For Money are signed to Trouble and Bass, which portents well for their brand of dark Portuguese club music, but for others in the genre, there’s a happy medium between Salem’s “Skullcrush” and obsession with crunk and the dark yet idyllic homage to Sapphic vampire love of Little Jinder’s “Youth Blood” (namely the 12th Planet and Flinch remix) that can easily be occupied by someone with the time, inclination and desaire to blend turly deep hardcore concepts with those of dance rhythms.

3. This is ridiculous. Possibly moreso than Electric Zoo for any great number of reasons…
