Hubris rears its ugly head quite often in matters of the heart. However, false bravado is never more present than in the moments, days, weeks, months and sometimes, years following a breakup. It’s really a matter of human nature. No person wishes to be consistently seen and regarded at their worst. Nobody likes feeling depressed and despondent, so what do we do as humans? Cope. The most powerful of all coping mechanisms is pride. False pride. Pride in the fact that you’re okay, pride in the fact that you have ascended past being concerned about a person, pride in knowing that you’re going to ultimately move on and be a winner in the game of life, irregardless of the condition of your psyche.
1975 UK #1 and US #2 single “I’m Not in Love” by 10cc is a classic and quintessential discussion of the nature of unwarranted but protective pride in the face of the pain of heartbreak. Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman’s songwriting here is excellent. As well, the Phil Spector esque wall of sound employed in the production is utterly amazing. A never ending loop of voices singing a melody, it provides a haunted yet inviting nature into the feel and mood of the lyrical content.

Stating that he’s “going through a phase,” “hanging her picture on the wall to hide a stain,” or “not to make a fuss and tell her friends if he calls her up,” this is a tale of a clearly delusional man who obviously can’t shake his emotions, neither is emotionally available enough as a person to quantify them. And that whispered “Big boys don’t cry” over the breakdown? So terribly mean, so terribly spiteful, so absolutely bitter and perfect. Yes, this typifies the average female emotions regarding the ignorance and stupidity of the male species, but to have those words uttered over such an epic track adds a delicious, painful and expressive irony to the record.
In matters of the heart, honesty and emotional availability are two of the cornerstone standards of having the maturity to deserve the love of she (or he) you are so enamored of. In describing this so meticulously and with such absolute aural splendor, 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” is an expressive winner and all time classic.
