THE DROP: The Glitch Mob and Kraddy, a west coast bass explosion.

22 May

LA bass crew the Glitch Mob is preparing to unleash their debut album Drink the Sea on the electronic dance music universe. Purveyors of a style known as “glitch hop,” a deep bass and dubstep friendly hip hop exploration, the crew, edIT, Boreta and Ooah are down with some names with whom you may be familiar, namely low fi Dilla devotee and hip hop transcendentalist Flying Lotus. They are also however, a member short these days. After years of travelling in the same circles and two years together as a unit, the crew parted ways with DJ and producer Kraddy just prior to the recording of their debut, yet this has not slowed down Kraddy’s production as well, as he appears fully prepared to not fall by the wayside in lieu of his former partners’ success.

Kraddy, on the other hand, serves up double fisted asskickings of hip hop thuggery masked as hard bass. He has played one of the ten best sets in the brief history of the U Street Music Hall, creating an out of control dance floor scene where people legit screamed and howled in joy with each new track dropped, the infectious energy taking a room from say, a level of 7, not to the expected 11, but to 12. His remix of the “Bombs Anthem” by NY underground anti-jiggy hip hop crew The Infesticons is not for the tame listener. This is pure bass blended with pure hip hop. Where the rest of the Glitch Mob has decided to become more atmospheric and soul searching in their bass explorations, Kraddy takes a propane blowtorch to the dance floor, inspiring no peace but intense bouts of fiery rage. Synths don’t soothe here. They race and clash with crushing basslines that smash into each other as the track sounds like a very dance friendly automobile disaster.

Whether together or apart, it’s quite clear that heavy bass has west coast proponents who are whether deep or hard, truly advancing the genre and creating worthwhile compositions of note. Do check for Kraddy on tour by visiting him on Twitter, and also check for the Glitch Mob’s debut to drop on May 25th.
